A Discourse Approach in Reading : Procedure

On 28 February 2016
Today is Sunday. I had a class to study with my teacher all day. In the morning we learnt about “Procedure” and in the afternoon, we learnt about “Comparison and Contrast”.
First of all, we learnt about the purpose of a procedure is to tell the reader how to do or make something that these texts are usually written in the present tense.
Text organisation
-goal = main heading and /or diagram.
-materials = listed in order of use.
-method = step oriented towards achieving the goal.
and then we learnt about how to make a banana shake, banana cake, Omelette (Jamie Oliver), and chicken soup.

then we learnt about how to use a toaster and answers the question.


Before time is up, She  began to teach about “Comparison and Contrast”. Then she told us to draw pictures of Apple and Orange. Then we had to compare what is similarities and differences both of them as well

My teacher gave correctives feedback about Budapest, Prague, and describe people

She assigned us to make groups of 5 persons and write a paragraph for describing a person, place, or animals that we want to write. We describe person because we thought it easier that other. We decided to describe “Cara Delevingne” because she is outstanding personality.

A Discourse Approach in Reading :Descriptive

Descriptive
On 1 February 2016
Fist of all we had a quiz test. This test is very hard because the last question we had to write about what we get after we read "Secret" use my own word at least 150 words. I tried to do my best. Then, we started to learn " Descriptive" Its purpose is to describe and reveal a particular person, place, or thing. 
My teacher taught us about

and Ants description

After that, She assigned us to read the text and answered the questions of “ Komodo Dragon (Varanus Komodoensis)


Before times up my teacher assigns us to do next exercises and next week she'll give a corrective feedback.
The next exercises are about Budapest, Prague, and describe people.

A Discourse Approach in Reading : Narrative (CONTINUED)

Narrative (CONTINUOUS)
On 25 January 2016
Today we learnt about "Secret" by Tim Winton part two to continue last week.Then we did exercise C, D and E
Exercise C : summary of the second part of the story.
"Kylie watches the hen sitting on ten eggs. She takes the lid off the well. She started to go down the well with her photo album every day. She watches Philip and her mother and wonders why her father is not with them. Philip discovers her in the well and hits her. Kylie throws the chicks down the well. Kylie hits the hen and throws it down the well. She chooses one special photo which makes her feel good. She cuts off her head from the special photo and throws it away."
Exercise D : What do you feel about Kylie, Kylie's mother and Philip?
I fell sorry for Kylie because she was alone and she didn't get warmth from her parents.
I disapprove of Kylie's mother because she didn't tell kylie about her relationship with Philip.
I like Philip because he takes care kylie as if kylie is his real daughter. 
Exercise E : What are themes in this short story?
- neglect.
- coping with the absence of a parent.
- problems associated with contemporary family life.

Finally, my teacher assigned a big project that is we have to make a cartoon book of "Secret" by Tim Winton and we have to use my own word .

A Discourse Approach in Reading : Narrative

Narrative
On 18 January 2016
Today we started to learn about "Narrative" that the purpose is to entertain and to nourish and extend the reader's imagination.
The reader is introduced to the main character(s), minor characters and atmosphere.Then my teacher explained about 
text organization
   -orientation 
   -complication 
   -resolution 
language features
   -who, where
   -Variety of verb/processes : linking, mental, and Action/material
   -linking words to do with time
   -specific participants

and then she assigned us to do the circle of secrets by Tim Winton

after that, we started to read " Secrets" by Tim Winton part one.
We summarized part one that kylie feels left out from her mother and Philip's activities. She becomes interested in the chickens in the yard. Somehow her secret helps her to feel less lonely. She finds the second egg and then finds out where other are being laid by an unhealthy-looking hen. The secret became bigger every day when she is left alone, she often shares the secret with her hen. She always thinks about her father when she looked at photographs.
We didn't read part two because times up, so my teacher assigns us to read part two.

Recount (CONTINUOUS)
On 11 January 2016
My teacher told us to write about "Crime" on the board. 

Then She gave a corrective feedback of the exercise from last week. After that, she gave us hand-outs that it is about "Factual Recount: News Report”: 5 Vietnamese nationals were arrested for stealing cash, 













and "Investigation report." 

She assigned us to do this exercise.

A Discourse Approach in Reading : Introduction & Recount

Introduction & Recount
On 4 January 2016
This is the first day of studying "A Discourse Approach in Reading"
First of all my teacher give a course syllabus for us and then she explained about it.
Today we started to learn about " Recount" that is the unfolding of a sequence of events over time and the purpose is to tell what happened. There are 3 types:
1.Personal Recount e.g. diary entry
2.Factual recount e.g. report of science experiment, police report, news report, historical account.
3.Imaginative recount e.g. a day in the life of Roman slave; how I invented.
But she's going to teach just 2 types:personal recount and factual recount.
Then my teacher explained about 
text organization

   - reorientation
language features
   - who, where,when,what
   - Action verbs/past tense
   -linking words to do with time
   -specific participants
After that, my teacher assgined us to read  "My Granpa's Funeral in Toroja"

, " An Excursion to the Botanic Gardens" and answer the questions that follow.

Before times up my teacher assigns us to do next excercise and next week she'll give a corrective feedback.
